Tire failure is the leading cause of RV accidents and one of the most common causes of roadside breakdowns. Unlike car tires, RV tires carry enormous loads, often sit for months without moving, and are frequently driven at highway speeds in extreme heat. Here's what you need to know to stay safe.
The Age Problem
RV tires age out before they wear out. Because RVs are driven far fewer miles than cars, the tread often looks fine when the tire is actually dangerously old.
Rubber degrades from the inside out due to UV exposure, ozone, heat cycling, and oxidation. A tire that looks fine on the outside may have internal cracking and degradation that makes it a blowout risk.
The rule: Replace RV tires at 5–7 years regardless of tread depth. Many manufacturers recommend 5 years; some experts say 7 is acceptable with careful inspection. Never use tires older than 10 years under any circumstances.
How to check tire age: Look for the DOT code on the sidewall. The last four digits are the week and year of manufacture — for example, "2319" means the 23rd week of 2019.
Proper Inflation
Tire pressure is the single most important factor in tire longevity and safety. Under-inflated tires overheat, which is the primary cause of blowouts. Over-inflated tires are more susceptible to impact damage.
Check pressure cold — before driving, when the tires have been sitting for at least 3 hours. Pressure increases as tires heat up during driving; checking hot tires gives a false reading.
Use the correct pressure — not the maximum pressure molded on the sidewall, but the pressure specified for your RV's actual loaded weight. Weigh your RV at a truck scale to know your actual axle weights, then consult the tire manufacturer's load/inflation table.
Check every time you travel — pressure can drop 1–2 PSI per month naturally, and temperature changes affect pressure significantly (roughly 1 PSI per 10°F change).
Load Rating
Every tire has a load rating — the maximum weight it can safely carry at its rated pressure. Exceeding the load rating is dangerous and accelerates tire wear.
Know your RV's actual loaded weight (not just the GVWR) and verify your tires are rated for that load. Many RV owners are surprised to find their tires are at or near their load limit when the RV is fully loaded.
Inspection Before Every Trip
Walk around your RV and inspect each tire before every trip:
- Pressure — use a quality gauge, not a visual check
- Sidewall condition — look for cracks, bulges, or cuts
- Tread depth — minimum 4/32" for safe highway driving
- Valve stems — check for cracks or damage
- Lug nuts — verify none are missing or loose
Tire Covers
UV exposure is the primary cause of sidewall cracking on RVs that sit for extended periods. Use tire covers whenever the RV is parked for more than a few days. This simple step can significantly extend tire life.
What to Do If a Tire Fails
If you experience a blowout while driving:
- Do NOT brake suddenly — this can cause loss of control
- Grip the wheel firmly and maintain your lane
- Gradually reduce speed by lifting off the throttle
- Steer to the shoulder when speed is reduced
- Come to a controlled stop
