RV Seasonal Maintenance Schedule: What to Do and When

Staying on top of RV maintenance is much easier when you have a schedule. Here's a complete seasonal maintenance guide organized by time of year, covering everything from spring commissioning to winter storage.

Spring: Commissioning for the Season

Spring is the most important maintenance window of the year. After months of storage, your RV needs a thorough inspection and recommissioning before you hit the road.

Roof and exterior:

  • Inspect the entire roof for cracks, tears, and failed sealant
  • Reseal any penetrations showing wear
  • Inspect exterior walls for delamination or new damage
  • Clean and condition the roof

Plumbing:

  • Flush the fresh water system and sanitize the tank
  • Remove winterization antifreeze from all lines
  • Inspect all connections for leaks under pressure
  • Test the water pump
  • Check the water heater anode rod; replace if needed

Electrical:

  • Test all 12V and 120V circuits
  • Check battery state of health; charge or replace as needed
  • Test the converter/charger output
  • Inspect shore power cord and inlet for damage

Mechanical:

  • Check tire pressure and condition
  • Lubricate all slide-out mechanisms and seals
  • Test all slide-outs through full travel
  • Test the awning
  • Lubricate leveling jacks and stabilizers

Safety:

  • Test smoke, CO, and LP gas detectors; replace batteries
  • Check fire extinguisher charge
  • Inspect LP gas system for leaks with a detector

Appliances:

  • Test refrigerator on both propane and electric
  • Test furnace and AC
  • Test all stove burners
  • Test water heater on both propane and electric

Summer: Ongoing Upkeep

During active camping season, stay on top of these regular tasks:

Monthly:

  • Check tire pressure (temperature changes affect pressure significantly)
  • Clean AC filters
  • Check battery water level (flooded lead-acid batteries)
  • Inspect roof seals if you've had heavy rain

After each trip:

  • Dump and flush tanks
  • Clean the exterior
  • Check for new damage or issues discovered during the trip
  • Address any problems before the next trip

Fall: Pre-Storage Preparation

Before temperatures drop, prepare your RV for reduced use or storage.

Roof and seals:

  • Final roof inspection before winter
  • Reseal any questionable areas before cold weather makes sealant application difficult

Plumbing:

  • Winterize the water system if temperatures will drop below freezing
  • Drain the water heater
  • Drain and flush the fresh water tank

Batteries:

  • Fully charge batteries before storage
  • Disconnect or use a battery maintainer to prevent discharge during storage
  • Consider removing batteries and storing indoors if temperatures will be extreme

Exterior:

  • Apply a UV protectant to rubber roof
  • Cover the RV if storing outdoors — a quality cover prevents UV damage and keeps the roof clean

Winter: Storage Maintenance

Even in storage, your RV needs occasional attention.

Monthly check:

  • Verify battery charge (if not on a maintainer)
  • Check for pest intrusion — mice love to nest in RVs
  • Inspect the cover for damage

Before any winter use:

  • Verify the water system is winterized or de-winterized as appropriate
  • Check propane levels
  • Test the furnace before relying on it in cold weather
