RV Electrical System Troubleshooting Guide
Diagnose and fix common RV electrical problems — from dead batteries and tripped breakers to shore power issues and inverter failures.
Few things are more frustrating than pulling into your campsite after a long drive and discovering your RV's electrical system isn't working. No lights, no AC, no refrigerator — and no idea where to start.
RV electrical systems are more complex than most people realize. You're dealing with two separate systems — 12-volt DC and 120-volt AC — plus batteries, converters, inverters, and shore power connections all working together. When something goes wrong, knowing where to look can save you hours of frustration and a costly service call.
Here's a systematic approach to troubleshooting the most common RV electrical problems.
Understanding Your RV's Electrical System
Before you start troubleshooting, it helps to understand the basics of how your RV's electrical system is organized.
12-Volt DC System: Powers your lights, water pump, furnace fan, slide-out motors, and most control systems. Runs off your house batteries. Works whether you're plugged in or not.
120-Volt AC System: Powers your air conditioner, microwave, outlets, and other high-draw appliances. Comes from shore power (campground hookup), a generator, or an inverter.
Converter/Charger: Converts 120V AC shore power to 12V DC to run your 12V systems and charge your batteries when plugged in.
Inverter: Converts 12V DC battery power to 120V AC so you can run AC appliances when not plugged in.
Understanding which system powers what will help you narrow down problems quickly.
Start Here: The Basic Checklist
Before diving into complex diagnostics, run through this quick checklist:
- Is your shore power cord fully seated at both the pedestal and the RV?
- Is the campground pedestal breaker on?
- Have you checked your RV's main breaker panel?
- Are your battery disconnect switches in the ON position?
- Is your battery charged?
You'd be surprised how often the answer is one of these simple items.
Troubleshooting: Nothing Works at All
If you have zero power — no lights, no outlets, nothing — start with the big picture.
Check shore power first. Plug a small lamp or phone charger directly into the campground pedestal to verify it has power. If the pedestal is dead, it's a campground issue, not your RV.
Inspect your shore power cord. Look for burn marks, melted plastic, or a loose connection at either end. A damaged cord is a fire hazard — don't use it.
Check the main breaker. Your RV has a main breaker (often 30-amp or 50-amp) that can trip from a power surge or overload. Reset it and see if power returns.
Check the battery disconnect. Many RVs have a battery disconnect switch or knife switch that cuts all 12V power. Make sure it's in the ON position.
Troubleshooting: 12-Volt Systems Not Working
If your lights, water pump, or other 12V items aren't working but your AC outlets are fine, the problem is in your 12V system.
Dead or Weak Battery
A fully charged 12V battery should read 12.6 volts or higher with a multimeter. Below 12.0 volts, the battery is significantly discharged. Below 11.8 volts, it may be damaged.
Check for:
- Parasitic drain — something drawing power when the RV is off
- Old batteries — RV batteries typically last 3–5 years
- Corroded terminals — clean with baking soda and water, then reconnect tightly
- Loose connections — check all battery cable connections
Blown Fuse
Your 12V system has a fuse panel, usually located near the battery or inside a cabinet. Pull each fuse and inspect it — a blown fuse will have a visible break in the wire inside. Replace with the same amperage fuse.
Never replace a fuse with a higher-amperage fuse. Fuses protect your wiring. A higher-amp fuse can allow enough current to flow to start a fire.
Converter Not Charging Batteries
If your batteries drain quickly even when plugged into shore power, your converter may not be working. With shore power connected, measure the voltage at your batteries — it should be 13.5–14.5 volts if the converter is charging. If it reads 12.6 or lower, the converter isn't doing its job.
Troubleshooting: AC Outlets Not Working
If your 12V systems work fine but your outlets are dead, the problem is in your 120V AC system.
Tripped GFCI Outlet
GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlets have a reset button on them. One tripped GFCI can knock out multiple outlets on the same circuit. Find all GFCI outlets in your RV (usually in the bathroom and kitchen) and press the reset button on each one.
Tripped Breaker
Check your breaker panel for any breakers that are in the middle position (tripped). Flip them fully to OFF, then back to ON to reset.
Overloaded Circuit
Running too many high-draw appliances at once — air conditioner, microwave, and electric water heater simultaneously — can trip a breaker. Stagger your usage and make sure you're not exceeding your shore power amperage.
Troubleshooting: Air Conditioner Not Working
Your RV's AC is one of the highest-draw appliances on board. Common issues include:
AC won't turn on: Check the breaker, verify shore power amperage (most RV ACs need 30 amps minimum), and check the thermostat settings.
AC runs but doesn't cool: A dirty air filter is the most common culprit — clean or replace it. If the filter is clean, the unit may be low on refrigerant or have a failing compressor.
AC trips the breaker: The unit may be drawing too much current due to a failing capacitor or compressor. This needs professional diagnosis.
Troubleshooting: Inverter Issues
If your inverter isn't producing AC power from your batteries:
- Check that the inverter is switched on
- Verify battery voltage is adequate (most inverters shut off below 11–11.5 volts)
- Check the inverter's internal fuse or breaker
- Look for error codes on the inverter display
When to Call a Professional
RV electrical work can be dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. Call a certified technician when:
- You smell burning or see scorched wires
- A breaker keeps tripping after reset
- You're getting intermittent power that comes and goes
- You suspect a wiring problem inside the walls
- Your converter or inverter has failed
Electrical problems that are ignored or improperly repaired are a leading cause of RV fires. Don't take chances.
