RV Electrical Issues: Troubleshooting Common Problems

Electrical problems are among the most frustrating issues RV owners face — and among the most common. Whether you're dealing with a dead battery, tripped breakers, or appliances that won't run on shore power, a systematic approach to troubleshooting saves time and helps you communicate clearly with a technician when professional help is needed.
Understanding Your RV's Electrical Systems
Most RVs have three separate electrical systems that work together:
Shore power (120V AC): Powers your air conditioner, microwave, outlets, and other high-draw appliances when plugged into a campground pedestal or home outlet. Managed by a breaker panel inside the RV.
Battery/12V DC system: Powers lights, fans, water pump, slide-out motors, and control boards when not plugged in. Fed by your house batteries (typically one or more 12V or 6V deep-cycle batteries).
Converter/charger: Converts shore power (120V AC) to 12V DC to run the 12V system and charge the batteries when plugged in.
Troubleshooting Shore Power Problems
Nothing works when plugged in:
- Check the campground pedestal breaker — it may have tripped
- Check your RV's main breaker (usually a 30A or 50A breaker at the power inlet)
- Test the outlet with a different device to confirm the pedestal is live
- Check your surge protector or EMS — it may have shut down due to low/high voltage
Some circuits work, others don't:
- Check individual breakers in your RV's breaker panel — reset any that are tripped
- On 50A service, each leg powers different circuits; a failed leg at the pedestal can knock out half your circuits
Outlets work but appliances don't:
- Check GFCI outlets — one tripped GFCI can kill multiple outlets on the same circuit
- Test with a different appliance to confirm the outlet is live
Troubleshooting Battery/12V Problems
12V system completely dead:
- Check the main battery disconnect switch — it may be off
- Check battery voltage with a multimeter — below 12.0V indicates a discharged battery; below 11.5V may indicate a failed battery
- Check the fuse panel for blown fuses (usually located near the battery or converter)
- Check battery cable connections — corrosion at the terminals is a very common cause of 12V failure
Batteries drain quickly:
- A parasitic draw is consuming power when nothing should be running
- Common culprits: a stuck relay, a faulty inverter, a malfunctioning control board, or a light left on
- Disconnect loads one at a time while monitoring current draw to isolate the source
Converter not charging batteries:
- Check that shore power is present and the converter is receiving power
- Test converter output voltage at the battery terminals — should be 13.5–14.5V when charging
- A failed converter will not charge batteries even when plugged in
When to Call a Professional
Some electrical issues are safe to troubleshoot yourself — checking breakers, testing outlets, inspecting battery connections. Others require professional diagnosis:
- Any issue involving the shore power inlet, main breaker, or wiring inside walls
- Inverter problems (high-voltage DC systems)
- Converter/charger failure
- Persistent parasitic draw you can't isolate
- Any burning smell, melted wiring, or signs of electrical fire
