RV Brake System Maintenance: What Every Owner Should Know

Your RV's brake system is the most critical safety system on the vehicle. Whether you're driving a Class A motorhome down I-20 or towing a fifth wheel through the Hill Country, properly functioning brakes are non-negotiable. Here's what every RV owner should know about brake maintenance.
Types of RV Brake Systems
Motorhomes use hydraulic disc or drum brakes on all axles, similar to a heavy-duty truck. Air brakes are common on larger Class A coaches.
Travel trailers and fifth wheels use electric trailer brakes controlled by a brake controller in the tow vehicle. The controller senses deceleration and sends a proportional signal to the trailer's electric brake magnets.
Surge brakes are a hydraulic system used on some lighter trailers — they activate automatically when the trailer pushes against the hitch during deceleration.
Annual Brake Inspection Checklist
At minimum, inspect your brake system once per year — more often if you tow heavy loads or drive mountainous terrain.
For Motorhomes
- Brake pad/shoe thickness — replace when worn to manufacturer minimums (typically 2–3mm for pads)
- Rotor condition — check for scoring, heat cracks, or minimum thickness
- Brake fluid level and condition — brake fluid absorbs moisture over time; replace every 2 years regardless of appearance
- Brake lines and hoses — look for cracks, swelling, or corrosion
- Caliper operation — slides should move freely; seized calipers cause uneven wear and pulling
- Parking brake function — test on a grade
For Trailers with Electric Brakes
- Brake magnet condition — magnets wear against the brake drum; measure amperage draw (should be 3–3.5A per magnet at 12V)
- Drum condition — check for scoring, heat discoloration, or out-of-round
- Brake shoe thickness — replace when worn to the rivets or backing plate
- Wiring and connectors — corrosion at the 7-pin connector is a common cause of brake failure
- Brake controller calibration — test and adjust gain setting with a loaded trailer
Warning Signs That Demand Immediate Attention
Never ignore these symptoms — they indicate a brake system problem that could cause an accident:
- Pulling to one side during braking — indicates uneven brake force, possibly a seized caliper or failed magnet
- Grinding or metal-on-metal noise — brake pads or shoes are worn through; immediate replacement required
- Soft or spongy brake pedal — air in the hydraulic system or a failing master cylinder
- Brake warning light — don't dismiss it; have the system diagnosed
- Trailer sway during braking — brake controller gain may be too low, or trailer brakes may be failing
- Burning smell after driving — dragging brakes; can cause brake failure and fire
Brake Controller Setup for Towing
If you tow a trailer with electric brakes, your brake controller must be properly calibrated for safe stopping. An improperly set controller either under-brakes (trailer pushes the tow vehicle) or over-brakes (trailer wheels lock up and cause sway).
Set the gain (sensitivity) by making a moderate stop from 25 mph on a flat, dry road. The trailer brakes should engage smoothly and proportionally — you should feel them helping, not grabbing. Adjust gain up or down until the stop feels balanced.
